Fold is a Ghost theme built for paid-newsletter publishers — an ink-on-paper reading experience that turns solid red at exactly one moment: the line between free and paid. These docs cover installing it, configuring it, and setting up the membership and paywall features it's built around.
What Fold is
Every newspaper has a fold — the crease where the free headline ends and you'd have to buy the paper to read the rest. Fold takes that literally. Everywhere a reader is simply reading, the theme behaves like a well-set dispatch: near-black serif type on cool paper, hairline rules instead of card shadows. The moment a visitor hits member-only content, the page stops being neutral — a torn-edge line breaks the paper field and the reader lands on a solid oxblood-red section, stamped MEMBERS ONLY, with exactly one action available.
That red field appears nowhere else in the theme. Its rarity is what makes the fold legible as a real threshold, rather than a themed footer link.
Who it's for
Independent writers and small publications running a paid newsletter on Ghost, monetizing through native membership tiers. If you're past "just blogging" and actively converting readers into paying subscribers, Fold treats that conversion moment as the main design problem — not a checkbox bolted onto a generic magazine skin.
